Western Astrological Planetary Associations

The Big DipperIn so-called Western astrology, your “sign” usually refers to what is technically your Sun sign.  What does that mean?  Your Sun sign is your most basic astrological trait.  It very generally defines your motivations, ego, needs and approach to life.  But its only the start of the your story.  Understanding the other influences, especially the “planets,” helps to refine the general picture that just the Sun sign gives. At the moment of your birth, the planets were in a unique position that don’t often repeat.  This pattern of the stars is like a signature that reflects certain cosmic influences on your life.   Each planet is associated with different aspects of the human condition listed below.  I’ve boldfaced the one word that is a key association.

  1. The Sun - Generally a yang/male association, it represents your will, vitality, essential self, individuality, and desire for power.
  2. The Moon - Generally a yin/female association, it represents the subconscious, instincts, habits, emotions, and memory.
  3. Mercury - The way you think, your reasoning abilities and communication style.
  4. Venus - Reflects love, the arts, beauty, and possessions in your life.
  5. Mars - Reflects physical energy and action, aggression, desire, competitiveness, and combativeness!
  6. Jupiter - Shows luck and the higher mind!  Represents expansion & growth, abundance, prosperity, good fortune, and also wisdom, and generosity.
  7. Saturn - Shows you your fears and your ambitions.  Represents restriction, limitation, caution, and so also organization, endurance, and discipline.
  8. Uranus - Is related to things unexpected.  It represents originality, independence, inventiveness, insight, rebelliousness and revolution.
  9. Neptune - Reflects imagination & intuition, psychic abilities, deception, illusion, self-sacrifice, spirituality, and dreams.
  10. Pluto - Is about destruction and regeneration.  renewal, transformation, and elimination.

Knowing these associations and finding where those planets are in your chart gives you a lot more information about “your sign” than just the Suns placement.
